Ventilator Support and Respiratory Care Services
After a serious illness or injury, many patients find themselves dependent upon ventilator support or with a fragile respiratory condition that requires state-of-the-art interventions. Trinity Neurologic Rehabilitation Center's Ventilator Support and Respiratory Care Services offer a full range of services as needed to achieve the greatest level of independence for the patient and family:

Ventilator Support Services
Trinity typically serves two types of patients in this program: those who require long-term or chronic ventilator support and those requiring a ventilator weaning program. The perceived limitations of ventilator dependency are challenged by Trinity's clinical team every day. The interdisciplinary staff works together to address the unique combination of physical, respiratory and psychological needs of the patients served.

Medical conditions that are common in patients requiring Ventilator support are:

  • Respiratory Failure due to:

    • Traumatic Brain Injury

    • Anoxic Episodes

    • Complicated Pulmonary

    • Medical Conditions

  • Spinal Cord Injury

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

  • Lung Cancer

  • Post-Operative Respiratory Conditions

  • Limited acceptance of Ventilator Dialysis patients

Respiratory Care Services
Respiratory Care Services traditionally provide care to patients who are bed-bound and chronically short of breath, need oxygen to assist them with breathing, or have tracheostomy tubes. In addition, patients may be in a weakened physical condition, nutritionally depleted or may require constant medical monitoring.

Typical interventions that are used to assist patients requiring Trinity's Respiratory Care Services are:

  • Bronchopulmonary hygiene, including

    • Intermittent Positive pressure Breathing

    • Chest Physical Therapy

    • Aerosolized Bronchodilators

  • Tracheostomy Tube Weaning, Plugging, and Decannulation

  • Compensatory Breathing Technique Training

  • Effective coughing Maneuver Training

  • Oxygen Therapy

  • Noninvasive Ventilator Support, including:

    • Negative Pressure Ventilation

    • Nasal CPAP

    • Bilevel Pressure Ventilation

    • Nasal Positive Pressure Ventilation
